singing for my supper

i left my home in a hard luck town
to sing for my supper
all i had was an old guitar
and a need to get away

so i hopped on a bus
and i got pretty far
far as my money would take me
fell in love
wrote a bad song
and sang it anyway

hey, my buddy do you wanna hear a song?
no, i didn't think so
well, if you don't mind i'll stand over here
and sing it at the top of my lungs

it’s hand to mouth and good to bad
and bad to good to better
the hours are long
when you live for the song
and the smile it's gonna bring

sing a little tune
sip a little wine
nice work if you can get it
knock on wood
the money's pretty good
if you don't need anything

hey, my buddy, do you wanna hear a song?
  no, i didn't think so
well, if you don't mind i'll stand over here
and sing it at the top of my lungs

i share my life with a beautiful girl
in a beautiful corner of the planet
not a day goes by
when i don’t think i’m
one hell of a lucky boy
now i’ve got a little hitch and my hair’s gone white
but i don’t feel any older
it feels like cheatin’ when it feel so good
singin’ with a young man’s voice

hey, my buddy, do you wanna hear a song?
  no, i didn't think so
well, if you don't mind i'll stand over here
and sing it at the top of my lungs
